This ninth installment of El Periscopio on industrial design with Damián CalvoLead Designer at Dyson , helped us to elevate the figure of the designer in his different functions. His professional career, the different positions he has held and companies in which he has worked, open the doors of this profession that we love so much.
On the Herit chair, which Damián designed during his internship at Normann Copenhagen. Normann Copenhagen with the support of Simon Legald, he remarks that it is difficult to innovate in the design of a piece of furniture like the chair, with its functionality already defined. And he says that behind a design there has to be a very cool narrative for it to become a reinvention and not just any product.
From the Danish way of working, he retains the importance of looking for the key idea, which is the narrative and inspiration of the creation. And he admires the way they work and enjoy the process, as well as the final contact with the consumer.
"Behind a design there has to be a really cool narrative for it to become a reinvention and not just any product," says Damian.
Mentors, like cities, inspire. As Damien tells it, his time in Hong Kong, a frenetic and energetic city, brought a dynamic and vibrant touch to his way of creating. In contrast to Copenhagen where his way of working was almost artisanal and with a lot of attention to detail .
Working for Bang & Olufsen he understood the exclusivity of the brand and its products. He tells us about the great work of research, design and trial and error behind his creations. That makes their products not only good, but exceptional.
Samsungthe great company that has technicians and engineers of the highest level, has the figure of the designer at the top. Everything is born from design and the figure of the designer is very well recognized in the infrastructure of this brand in which I work.
Behind the great ideas he presented to the company, there was user research, product research, design market trends and the latest innovations.
"The goal was to connect with the user in the best possible way," says Damian. That makes it possible to get to know and understand him much better.
In his most recent role and as Lead Designer for DysonThe engineer is the one who works on the innovation, the project and at the same time makes it all come true. It is then when Damian supervises a team of designers with his insights for an engineering idea and works to define the aesthetics of the product.
The guest explains the work of the designer as a professional who adapts to the different design languages as the project requires. And he stresses the importance of constantly adapting in this position.
